The story Jesus told of the rich young ruler is recounted in Matthew 19, Mark 10 and Luke 18, and is familiar to most Christians. But I wonder, if we may be missing the point. We all focus on what he was asked by Jesus to give up-all of his wealth. But I think the point isn't in what he was asked to give up, but in what he stood to gain. Jesus asked him to sell all that he had and to give it to the poor and promised that he would have treasure in heaven. Then Jesus invited him to, "come, follow me." The wealth of this world is temporary at best. What Jesus was offering, money cannot buy. In Luke 9:23-25 we read, "Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?"...
